Candidate Referees for FIFA World Cup 2018
11.20FIFA has recently selected the candidate referees for the next World Cup. They will be appointed to various competitions in 2015 and will be monitored by the FIFA Referees Committee. Those who will be successful will be added to the list of prospective referees for the 2018 World Cup, along with the officials that competed in the last qualifying cycle and are still age-eligible. There is no Canadian on the candidates list, so, after more than 40 years, Werner Winsemann will continue to be the only referee from Canada who blew his whistle at a World Cup (Germany 1974). The assistant referee Joe Fletcher (photo), who was successful in Brazil, will be again the only Canadian candidate, in a trio led by Mark Geiger (USA).
