New format for youth championships in 2017

Starting in 2017, the National Championships youth competitions will be reorganised into two age categories: the U-15 Cup and U-17 Cup, for both boys and girls soccer. It will mark the first time since 2000 since these age categories were featured in the Sport Chek National Championships. The change reduces two age categories by one year, from U-18 to U-17 and U-16 to U-15. The senior competitions will continue while the U-14 competition will no longer being contested. Each national youth competition will be played in one host city, with venues to be announced at a later time. The competitions will continue to feature province and territory club winners from across the country. "Canada Soccer engaged in an analysis of the Sport Chek National Championships in 2014 and 2015, consulting with all areas of the membership", said Canada Soccer General Secretary, Peter Montopoli. "In a changing soccer landscape, we feel that these modifications will enhance our national competitions and better reflect the train to compete stage of the long term player development pathway".
As a direct consequence, this change will impact the selection process of the future national referees and assistant referees. Although the current CSA Policy for Nomination and Selection of National List Officials does not mention the specific age category (candidates are required to attend a National Club Championship tournament in the year of nomination, as appointed by the CSA), the selection was traditionally done at the U-18 Club Nationals. Since that competition will no longer exist after 2016, the CSA will likely move the selection process to the Senior Club Nationals or another senior competition, as it happens around the world.
