Becoming a FIFA referee was a long-term dream for Mathieu Bourdeau. Now, less than two years since his dream came true, he suddenly decided to stop not only his international career, but refereeing altogether.
The recent match Ottawa Fury Fort Lauderdale Strikers was not only the last NASL game for the Ottawa team, but also the last match for referee Bourdeau (photo). After 23 years of refereeing, he unexpectedly decided to retire at only 36, due to work and family reasons. Bourdeau started refereeing in 1993, became a National referee in 2007 and earned his FIFA badge in 2015. He was appointed to the CONCACAF U-17 Championship 2015, Pan-American Games 2015, FIFA World Cup qualifiers (St. Kitts & Nevis El Salvador, Guatemala Trinidad & Tobago, St. Vincent & Grenadines USA), CONCACAF Champions League (Deportivo Saprissa CD Dragon), international friendly matches (Brazil Costa Rica, El Salvador Armenia), as well as the 2015 French Super Cup (Paris St. Germain Olympique Lyon). In MLS, Bourdeau had 4 appearances as referee and 59 as fourth official. He also participated at three CONCACAF Referee Symposiums (2013, 2014, 2015). In Canada, Bourdeau refereed the first leg of the 2016 Canadian Championship final (Toronto Vancouver) and 20 national tournaments (2 Canada Games, 3 CIS, 1 CCAA, 4 All-Stars and 10 Club Championships).
